Nigeria National Power Grid has collapsed again as many households and businesses in the country are now in darkness because of disruption in electricity.

Punch reports that electricity generation dropped sharply from over 4,500 megawatts to as low as 24 megawatts as of 1:30 pm.

The reports shows that all the 23 power generation plants connected to the grid lost output during the incident, leading to zero power allocation to each of the 11 electricity distribution companies.

Coming weeks after a similar incident occurred on December 2025, which caused widespread power outages across the country, this is the first grid collapse recorded in 2026.

As grid collapses over the years have been traced to technical faults, inadequate maintenance of transmission lines, and fluctuations in generation capacity, government and power operators have been charged to implement contingency measures to prevent recurring failures.
