The candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2024 Ondo State governorship election, Chief Ajayi Alfred Agboola, has officially withdrawn his appeal at the Supreme Court against Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the winner of the election.
This was contained in a letter addressed to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. In the letter, Agboola confirmed that he is aware of the appeal filed on his behalf regarding the outcome of the election.
He said an agreement has been reached to withdraw the case after careful consultations with his family, party members, associates and legal advisors.
“As the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, I have engaged in thoughtful discussions with my family, party members, associates, and legal advisors. After careful deliberation, we have reached a consensus that the appeal should be withdraw and I’m by this letter so do.”
The former deputy governor of the state, congratulated Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa and pledged his support for the state’s leadership, affirming his dedication to contributing positively to the development of Ondo State and the nation.
Speaking further, Ajayi said: “Having served as the former Deputy Governor and as a representative of my constituents at the national level, my foremost commitment is to the principles of good governance and the promotion of peaceful coexistence in Ondo State and across Nigeria.
“In this spirit, I extend my heartfelt wishes to His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa as he leads our state and I remain dedicated to contributing positively to the State and National development.”
Ajayi lost the 2024 governorship election of the state under PDP to the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Governor Aiyedatiwa, having scored a total of 117,845 votes behind the governor, who scored 366,781 votes.
He challenged the results of the election but lost at both the Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal. He later proceeded to the Supreme Court to challenge the verdicts of the lower court until this withdrawal.
