A group of soldiers in Benin known as “Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR) said they had removed Mr Patrice Talon as the president of the country.
According to the outlet TchadOne, as reported by Daily Post, the assault was carried out by a group of soldiers led by Lieutenant Colonel Pascal Tigri.
The situation was out of hand later in the morning when Tigri appeared on national television, reported to be under military control, declaring himself “chairman of the military re-establishment committee.”
Cotonou remains tense, with eyewitness reports of troop deployments around key strategic locations.
This has added to the increase of political instability in West Africa with coup falling upon coup as recently seen in Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Patrice Talon, has been in charge since 2016 with a promise to vacate office in April 2026 after the presidential poll.
