Following the resignation of Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and his scheduled defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has said that his defection may affect the fortune of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the State.

After announcing his resignation from the party on March 29, 2026, Ahmad had reacted that the move could have some impact on APC’s prospects in Kano, but noted that the situation remains manageable.

“Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s move to another party may affect our performance in Kano. However, it is something we can handle,” he said.

Speaking further, Ahmad added that the party can still secure victory if it remains united and organised.

CrowMedia learnt that the planned defection follows many weeks of consultations between Kwankwaso, leaders of the Kwankwasiyya movement, and top figures within the ADC.

According to Daily Nigerian reports, Kwankwaso has in recent times held a series of high-level meetings with major opposition stakeholders as part of efforts to forge a broader political coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Among them were his engagement with prominent political figures, including the ADC National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola; the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi; and the senator representing Bayelsa West, Seriake Dickson.

Political analysts have said that his movement is part of opposition strategies to build a formidable alliance ahead of 2027 in order to unseat APC.
