Jonathan Left Guinea-Bissau Safely After Military Coup

Following the military coup that toppled Guinea Bissau‘s democratic government, the Federal Government has confirmed that Former President Goodluck Jonathan is safe and has left Guinea-Bissau.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, disclosed this on Thursday in an interview in Abuja.

“Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is very safe and out of Guinea-Bissau. He left with a special flight with members of his delegation, including Mohamed Chambas,” he said.

President Jonathan, led the West African Elders Forum Election Observation Mission to monitor Sunday’s presidential and legislative elections in Guinea-Bissau. They were still in the country before the military announced it had seized power.

Stressing the importance of maintaining peace, stability and the well-being of the people of the country Jonathan led group appealed for calm among residents and reaffirmed their readiness to support Guinea-Bissau at this sensitive period.
