Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has deployed the use of drones to support traffic monitoring and security surveillance in the city of Lagos.
Revealing this at the inauguration of the programme, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, explained that the new system would provide real-time aerial coverage of major roads, which will enable faster interventions in emergencies.
“We have deployed the traffic management solution device to conduct enforcement instead of physical contacts between our operatives and violators. We have deployed drones to monitor and manage traffic to get real-time information as it relates to any activity, especially road traffic incidents on the road,” he said.
Speaking further, he said “This transition transcends the mere acquisition of equipment; it embodies a strategic reformation that positions LASTMA at the forefront of digital governance in traffic management. It will enable swifter interventions, improved safety outcomes, augment emergency response coordination and bolster security frameworks.
“We want to assure the public that this deployment shall be conducted under stringent adherence to privacy safeguards, ethical standards and regulatory compliance, thereby reinforcing public trust in the system’s transparency and integrity,” he added.
He noted that the agency was deploying technology in data collection to help the agency record road traffic incidents.
The general manager informed everybody that the initiative of the drone was consistent with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, which takes technology and innovation as tools for improving urban management and safety in the city.
