Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has disagreed with the believe that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will capture the southeast region thereby leading Nigeria to becoming a one-party.
Obi made this known in Abuja while speaking on the recent defection of Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah and his Bayelsa counterpart, Douye Diri, to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“Peter Mbah is a good friend, and he acted based on his own calculations. But nobody is ‘capturing’ the South-East. Leadership is about doing the right thing for people to follow you, not coercion.”
He further maintained that no party will win any state just because it has a governor, saying that “This is a democracy, not military rule. The people decide where they go, not governors or senators.”
He appealed to public officials to implement good policies that will have direct bearing on the lives of citizens, because it is only performance in governance that can that bring loyalty and not political realignment.
Concerning the proposed protest by Omoyele Sowore for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, Obi said believed there was no need for Kanu’s arrest in the first place.
“There was no need for Kanu’s arrest in the first place. Agitators must be engaged through dialogue, negotiation and consultation. Let’s follow the law, not arbitrary actions.”
