Ondo State Governor, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has hailed the founding fathers and past leaders of the State, describing the Golden Jubilee celebration as a moment of deep historical reflection and a launchpad for a bold, future-focused vision.
Speaking at the Ondo at 50 World Press Conference held at the Government House, Akure, the Governor said the anniversary is “not merely commemorative but civilisational in significance,” offering an opportunity to reflect on the State’s origins, assess its progress and strategically plan for the next half century.
Tracing the birth of Ondo State, Governor Aiyedatiwa recalled the long political struggle, intellectual advocacy and moral persuasion that culminated in its creation, noting that the State emerged from the yearning of its people for governance that is closer, fairer and more inclusive.
He paid glowing tribute to the first civilian Governor, Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin, describing him as “a rare gem and a statesman of uncommon integrity,” whose principled leadership set enduring standards for governance, accountability and public morality in Ondo State.
The Governor also acknowledged the contributions of other nationalists and elders, including the late Chief Ayo Fasanmi, late Barrister Deji Adegoroye, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Basorun Seinde Arogbofa, noting that their ideals remain deeply ingrained in the State’s political consciousness.
Governor Aiyedatiwa recognised successive military and civilian administrations for shaping the State’s growth, from Wing Commander David Ikpeme and Colonel Moses Fasanya to civilian leaders including Chiefs Bamidele Olumilua and Adebayo Adefarati, Dr Olusegun Agagu, Dr Olusegun Mimiko and his immediate predecessor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu, SAN, CON.
He also paid tribute to the pioneer public servants led by Chief Theophilus Iwajomo and Chief Elkanah Adeneye Emuleomo, who laid the foundation for institutional governance in the State.
Highlighting achievements over the past five decades, the Governor cited progress in education, healthcare, agriculture, road infrastructure, industrialisation, public sector reforms and human capital development, despite economic, environmental and security challenges, driven by the enduring Ondo spirit of intellect, industry and resilience.
He outlined key activities for the Golden Jubilee, including statewide interfaith thanksgiving services, a public lecture themed “Ondo State: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow,” cultural and historical exhibitions, and a gala and awards night celebrating excellence and service.
Looking ahead, Governor Aiyedatiwa unveiled a long-term vision centred on knowledge-driven growth, industrial competitiveness, environmental sustainability, digital innovation and strong democratic institutions, stressing that Ondo State is determined not just to respond to change, but to shape it.
