Nigeria Minister of works, said on Wednesday during press briefing at the State House in Abuja that Carter bridge which links Lagos Island to the mainland has been marked for demolition.

Revealing this after FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu, Umahi said a sum of N5.6 billion has been approved for advanced engineering consultants to handle the design and costing of the reconstruction of the bridge.

“Recall that we have been to FEC and got approval after going through stakeholders’ engagements. The total recommendation was that Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it should be demolished and then a new bridge constructed,” he said.

Umahi said that the reconstruction of the popular bridge is part of the efforts of President Tinubu to strengthen critical transport infrastructure across the country and make life easy for commuters.

Six other major road projects have also been approved across different geo-political zones.

“We are presenting a minimum of four completed projects in each zone for presidential commissioning by May 15. These are not palliative works; they are major infrastructure projects,” he said.
