Following the recent US strike on terrorists in Sokoto, Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has asked the Federal Government to immediately end all military cooperation with the United States.
Gumi, who made this known via his Facebook account on Friday, said US involvement could worsen Nigeria’s security challenge which will undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.
He said the fight against terrorism should be done by nations with cleans hand and not the US because the global military record of the US fight against terrorism, gives it no global credibility to do so.
He said it is a mistake for Nigeria to allow foreign powers to play a role in its counterterrorism operations, because according to him, terrorists do not truly fight terrorists. Such involvement would often result in civilian casualties.
Arguing that airstrikes alone cannot end terrorism, Gumi stressed that effective fight against terrorrism requires strong ground operations, which he said Nigeria has enough personnel to carry out if properly organised.
“This is the mistake Nigeria has made. Terrorists don’t fight terrorists in truth; they may only kill innocent people and have ulterior motives behind the drama of fighting terror.
“As a principle, no nation should allow its land to be a theater of war. And no nation should allow its neighbors to be their enemies.”
