The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a brief shutdown of its online result checker portal on technical ground.
The announcement which came via WAEC’s official X handle on Wednesday, has generated reactions among Nigerians who variously expressed annoyance over the unfortunate shutdown and poor performance recorded in the English Language of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination.
In a statement by WAEC however, the council assured the public that its technical team is seriously working to restore access to the portal within the next 24 hours.

“WAEC hereby informs the general public that the result checker portal @waecdirect.org is temporarily shut down due to technical issues.
“However, the Council is working assiduously to ensure that candidates are able to access their results in the next 24 hours. We apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused you.”
In the same social media space, many candidates and parents also expressed concerned over this issue which they see as taking candidates for granted particularly in the area of logistics failures such as the delay in the conduct of the English Language paper in some areas.
Many Nigerians also see this as a deliberate manipulation of candidates like in JAMB just to generate revenue from the candidates by failing them.
According to @JayTrezy X account, “Just like JAMB, WAEC is gambling with the future of Nigerians. If the majority of the D’s, E’s and F8’s awarded in English are rechecked, WAEC will pay dearly.”
Parents are not even left out in the expression of displeasure over the shutdown of the portal as they demand a complete recall of the results of the 2025 WAEC examination.
WASSCE is a critical examination for secondary school students across West Africa to determine their eligibility for tertiary education.
Coming at a time when WAEC is transitioning to digital platforms with the launch of its Digital Certificate Platform in 2022 to allowing candidates accessing and verifying certificates online in order to enhance the efficiency of the process, many Nigerians believe that the nature of the technical issue should be disclosed.
Nigerians hope that the issue will be resolved as within 24 hours as announced by WAEC so as to allow candidate to check their results.
