President Tinubu has nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power, pending Senate confirmation, to drive ongoing sector reforms.

This was disclosed in a statement on Wednesday via the official X handle of presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

According to him, the presidency said the nomination, which has been formally transmitted to the Senate, is “subject to confirmation by the Senate,” in line with constitutional requirements.

In the statement signed by  Onanuga, the nomination follows the resignation of the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who “stepped down from office to pursue elective office.”

Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe was born on March 21, 1966, in Oyo Town and is of Ibadan ancestral descent, tracing his roots to Jegede Compound in the Labo area of Ibadan, Oyo State.

He had his early education at St Mary’s RCM School, Oyo; Federal Government College, Ogbomoso; and the University of Ife, Ile-Ife, where he graduated with a First Class Degree in Civil Engineering in 1988.

The 60-year-old is also an alumnus of Lagos Business School, INSEAD, Harvard Kennedy School and Harvard Business School. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA), Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (FCIT) and Certified in Governance of Enterprise IT (CGEIT).

He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led “wide-ranging initiatives in fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation, and governance.”

During that period, he also advised government institutions and private sector organisations on “strategic reforms, regulatory frameworks, and investment structuring.”

At present, Tegbe serves as Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), a role in which he oversees efforts to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China.

The statement noted that the NCSP also “coordinates engagements with public sector stakeholders to advance economic and social development in line with FOCAC objectives.”

His background includes notable experience in the power sector, particularly in regulatory and institutional reform processes involving agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company (NBET).

President Tinubu, according to the statement, expects the minister-designate to “bring his extensive expertise to bear to advance critical reforms and deliver improved outcomes for Nigerians in the power sector,” upon confirmation by the Senate.
