Following the fresh wave of defections of the members of House of Representatives from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday described the ADC as a dead party.

Akpabio made this statement during plenary after the Senate officially announced that several lawmakers had left the ADC for other parties, including the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Labour Party.

He made the comment during plenary and it immediately attracted the reactions of lawmakers.

“Maybe all those defecting from ADC should just compile everything in one paper and bring it, so that we don’t keep announcing, announcing, announcing. Because I think ADC is dead,” he said.

He also questioned how frequent lawmakers were changing parties because according to him, some have defected recently about three times within a month.

He therefore suggested that defections should be submitted in batches rather than read individually during plenary.

“If you are defecting from Labour, you write all of you. If you are moving from ADC, you write all of you. If you are entering NDC, you write all of you,” he said.

Akpabio outburst reflects a wider political shift in the National Assembly, as some lawmakers have continued to move from one party to another.
